Cytopathology Fellowship

Description

The program offers one full year of advanced training in diagnostic cytopathology and the performance of image guided fine needle aspiration (FNA). The Cytopathology laboratory evaluates approximately 20,000 gynecologic and 8,000 non-gynecologic specimens. There is one ACGME accredited fellowship position available.

The fellowship year includes extensive clinical responsibilities such as interpretation of gynecological and non-gynecological specimens, and provide rapid on-site evaluation of FNA material to radiologists, pulmonologists, and gastroenterologists. Responsibility will increase gradually throughout the year with the goal of training skilled cytopathologists who excel in any practice setting. Teaching and involvement in clinically oriented or translational-research projects are additional components of the fellowship training. The one-year fellowship is located at Harborview Medical Center.

Requirements

Prospective candidates are anticipated to have fulfilled the training prerequisites for certification in Anatomic Pathology as mandated by the American Board of Pathology. This requirement may be waived by the Fellowship Selection Committee for exceptionally qualified international graduate applicants with ECFMG certification.

Program Aims

• In-depth training of pathologists in cytopathology so that they develop excellent clinical skills, critical thinking, evidence-based practice and are well attuned to the advances and changing demands of the profession.
• Mentoring the trainee in translational research projects with the goal of presenting their work at a national meeting(s) and publishing their work in a peer-reviewed journal(s).  
• Developing subspecialty-focused teaching skills to enable the fellow to serve as a competent mentor to junior trainees.
• Providing exposure to cytology management and quality assurance.

Stipend & Benefits

Appointment is for one year. Stipend and benefits are based on the schedule for residents at an equivalent level. Fellows are encouraged to apply for extramural funding if additional research training is desired.
